I had the absolute pleasure of doing hair and makeup for Mika and their moms for not one, but two Colorado wedding days: an intimate meadow elopement in Winter Park followed by their wedding reception in Vail.
As a non-binary marrier, Mika was understandably a little nervous about wedding hair and makeup. They wanted to feel special without feeling like they were being turned into someone else or trying to fit the mold of a typical "bride."
At their trial, we initially planned two distinct looks. For their Winter Park elopement, we were leaning whimsical and romantic—think 2005 Pride & Prejudice running through a meadow energy. For Vail, something sleeker and more androgynous. The idea was to create space for both the more femme and masc parts of Mika’s identity across the two celebrations.
But this is also exactly why we have trials.
After sitting with the first look, Mika and I talked more about how they actually feel most like themselves day to day. Instead of forcing the original plan simply because we'd already made one, we pivoted.
For both wedding days, we went with glowing, skin-first makeup, a subtle wing, a richer lip, and their hair down in the beachy waves they already know and love. Still elevated. Still worthy of the occasion. Just a whole lot more Mika.
And that mattered more than creating two looks for what they thought they should want or need, and more aligned with what actually felt good to them.
Mika walked into both celebrations feeling comfortable, affirmed, confident, and—most importantly—like themselves. No wondering whether the person in the mirror felt familiar. No spending the day overthinking their hair and makeup.
Because your wedding day is already a pretty big deal. Feeling out of place in your own skin doesn’t need to be part of it.
